Haircare and advice- Why is my hair damaged?
There are many factors that can cause hair damage so the first important step is to find out the cause and origin of the damage. From here we can then analyse how to fix it!
There are three main sources that will cause the most damage- Chemical, mechanical and environmental. From colouring, to UV (sun exposure), to over styling (without protection) all of these could be playing a role in your hair damage. Each one of these types of damage requires a different treatment plan to repair. This is why it is very important to understand what your hair needs!
We highly recommend regular visits to your salon. This will ensure that your hair can be properly analysed and the right home haircare plan is in place. The best hair repair is building healthy habits to prevent future problems. Including the products that go on your head to the vitamins that are needed in your body. This is our take on the most common causes and how to fix them.
How to fix Dry hair
Dry hair needs moisture and can be prone to breaking when there is a lack of it. The most common causes for dry hair are over washing, sun damage, change in season (cold air) and over styling. Because of this the natural oils and moisture could be stripped from the hair causing the dryness.
The shampoo and conditioner that you are using will play a vital role. Make sure to take a good look at what you are using and look for products that pack in the moisture! Ingredients like avocado, shae butter, argan oil are all perfect moisturisers for that silky feel. Only wash your hair 2-3 times a week and make sure to put your condition through your ends and not so much on your roots (as your roots produce natural moisture). We also highly recommend having a tangle teezer or comb handy in the shower to comb your conditioner or treatment through. This is one easy step to combat dry damaged hair!
The weather also can effect your hair. Especially as the cold sets in! The air can cause static and very dry ends. Your haircare routine in the winter months will need to be adjusted slightly. Although a hair mask is recommended all year long an intensive mask may be needed in the cold weather paired with some antistatic leave in conditioner. A little self love and care goes a long way!
Lastly, over-styling with drying products like dry shampoo or hairspray can cause damage! Our hot tip would be to only use the dry shampoo on your roots and buy a high quality hair spay that has damage control in it. Watch the dryness and damage disappear by following these easy steps!

How to fix Chemically Damaged hair
This one is for all of our colour lovers out there! We are extremely lucky to work with a colour range that does very minimal damage to the hair, but after years of colouring there will be some. Especially if you are on the lighter side of the spectrum! Or if you have box dyed or had a cheap colour used in your hair. There are steps that can be taken to further reduce the amount of damage caused.
The biggest thing to watch out for is over processed hair (yes we are talking to you blondies!) Once the hair is severely damaged there is no going back so a cut may be needed in some cases. You will find darker hair colours that are damaged will fade quite quickly. If your hair is over processed and damaged then protein treatments and bonders are for you! Look for products that include strengthening ingredients like protein, keratin and repair or bonding complexes. For others, these steps can be followed so it doesn’t get bad.
- Ask for a bonder to be added into your colour. This helps protect the bond of the hair and is perfect for darker and lighter colours.
- Do your research- Higher quality colour ranges will cause minimal damage.
- If you are planning on going blonde you need the correct products! Your stylist needs to select the right in salon service and also recommend at home haircare.
- Wash your hair in cooler water with salon quality product
- Ditch the permanent straightening and opt for keratin smoothing. This is a much healthier option.
- Re book your appointments- your stylist will need to maintain your hair every 4-8 weeks so that they can keep it healthy.

How to Fix Mechanically damaged hair
We love our styling tools! What would we do without them!? There are so many possibilities from a big blow out to classic curls and us girls are doing this every day! These tools may be amazing and useful, but if not used correctly can be one of the main causes of damage!
Do you use a heat protectant every time you style your hair? (blowdry, curl or straighten). It is an absolute MUST before any heat touches your hair! Not only will it help hold your style but will protect each strand from damage that may be caused. Exposing hair to high heat (180-230 degrees) could cause irreversible damage if not protected properly. This type of damage will cause split ends, dry ends, breakage and colour fade. So make sure you are using a spray or serum every time you style!
Your home haircare routine will also help smooth out your cuticle and reverse any dryness caused. Your tools are also very important to assess- you need to be using good quality stylers and dryers as some brands will cause damage no matter what you do! We love GHD, they have had years of research and quality manufacturing- they are set at the optimal temperature to style and cause minimal damage!
